Call Congress Today and Support HR 1932 to Keep Criminal Aliens in Jail

Federation for American Immigration Reform

Call Your Representatives Today and Tell them to Co-Sponsor H.R. 1932 to Keep Criminal Aliens Off Our Streets!

Everyday Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is forced to release dangerous criminal aliens onto American streets because either the alien refuses to cooperate with deportation proceedings or because their country of origin refuses to take them back. Under current law, ICE must release these criminals six months after a 90-day removal period has expired if a court determines that removal of the alien is not reasonably foreseeable. This month, however, Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) of the House Judiciary Committee introduced a bill that would stop this injustice and keep criminal aliens behind bars and out of your neighborhood.

Rep. Smith's bill, H.R. 1932, the "Keep Our Communities Safe Act," grants the Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) the authority to detain dangerous aliens who have been ordered deported, but cannot be removed. More specifically, the Act would allow the DHS Secretary to renew the detention period of certain criminal aliens every six months to keep Americans safe from lawbreakers who are set free in their communities.

The House Judiciary Committee already held a hearing on the bill and plans to mark-up it up tomorrow. (See FAIR Legislative Update, May 31, 2011) At the hearing, witnesses, such as the Fort Myers, Florida Chief of Police Douglas Baker, praised Chairman Smith's efforts. (Id.) "I applaud House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith for … the steps he is taking to correct this injustice … We have a responsibility to our citizens, legal residents, visitors, and law enforcement personnel to ensure that these dangerous criminal aliens are not allowed to reenter into communities within the United States of America." (Id.)

According to recent data provided by ICE, nearly 4,000 criminal aliens have been released each year since 2008. And, according to a 2007 audit conducted by the Inspector General of the U.S. Justice Department, 73 out of 100 criminal aliens had an average of six arrests after being released! Call your Representatives today and tell them to become a co-sponsor of H.R. 1932 and to stop releasing criminal aliens back onto the streets! You can contact your Representatives here.
